SCOPE OF SERVICES 

Medical Health Care Group (MHCG) is a fully integrated group using an interdisciplinary team approach to provide the continuum of care for veterans in the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. The personnel in this Health Care Group consist of physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician’s assistants, respiratory therapists, social workers, nutritionists, technicians, pharmacists, and administrative and clerical staff. The Medical Health Care Group is one of the 13 Health Care Groups in the VA Long Beach Healthcare System.


Types and Ages of Patients Served:

The types of patients served by the Medical Health Care Group can be classified into the following groups:

  1. The pre Vietnam era veterans.
    This group tends to have extensive and long term health care needs.
  2. The Vietnam veterans.
    This group tends to have problems related to substance abuse, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and other mental health issues.
  3. Post Vietnam era veterans including Gulf War veterans.
    This group has a higher number of women veterans.The health care needs of this group continues to evolve.
    The patients served by this Health Care Group fall into two primary age groups: Adults and geriatric.The patient population consists of 95-98% male patients.

Patient Care

The primary care and subspecialty clinics provide ambulatory care to over 35,000 eligible veterans per year. The Emergency Room is equipped and staffed to maintain a level II ER.The Health Care Group has 64 operating beds including 16 critical care beds, 24 general medical beds in progressive in the Progressive Care Unit, and 24 medical beds in ward South 6
