The world definitely needs more people like them – Volunteers.

They could be doing so many things for themselves, but instead they choose to donate their time, talent and tender hearts to serve a common goal.

Marvin Zavatsky is one of those noble individuals.

He volunteers five out of seven days at VA Long Beach helping Veterans and their families in need of an escort. He gently greets every single person who passes by him with a smile on his face. It’s just impossible not to smile back.

“I feel so good when I can talk to people and help them heal,” said Zavatsky, a Veteran himself.

During 2014, more than 2,380 volunteers provided more than 300,000 hours of driving, escorting, feeding, filing, serving and, sometimes, simply sitting with a Veteran in their hospital room. VA Long Beach thanks them for their service offering complimentary breakfast and lunch during Volunteer Week, April 12-18, 2015.

Numbers apart, the amount of caring and sharing that our volunteers provide to our Veterans is immeasurable.

Volunteering is both healthy and rewarding. Whether it’s a few hours a day or an hour a week, your time and effort will help improve the quality of life for our Veterans.  If you would like to volunteer with VA Long Beach, please call our Voluntary Service Department at 562-826-5715.

Through volunteerism, you will let our Veterans know that their service to America has not been forgotten.
