Access Policy

The Health Care Sciences Library is open to VALBHS medical staff, employees and students in VALBHS training programs.

Circulation Policies

Books may be checked out for three weeks and renewed twice if no one else needs them. You may renew by phone by calling 562.826.5529. Journals may be checked out for three days. Audiovisuals videotapes, audio cassettes and slides may be checked out for one week. All items may be renewed in person or by telephone (X5529). There are no renewals for items borrowed from other libraries.

Personal Computers

The Library provides PCs for the use of VALBHS employees. Installation of software programs is not permitted. Installed programs or features include MS Office and Web based programs such as OVID, MD Consult and other knowledge based information resources.


Journal subscriptions total 481 with back files on most titles for fifteen years. Holdings are listed in printouts. The book collection can be accessed by the card catalog. Audio-Visuals include Audio-Digest, Network for Continuing Medical Education, and satellite programs.


Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery: Books, journals, journal articles and Audio-Visuals not available in the library will be borrowed for VALBHS staff. Please submit requests at least one week in advance.

Reference/End User Training: Literature searches using the National Library of Medicine, MEDLARS, Dialog and other data bases are available on request. CINAHL, PsychInfo and other databases are also available for staff to request or to use. Training on these databases is given on request.

Photocopier: A photocopier is available in the library for copying Library materials. It is restricted to VALBHS staff and students. No personal copying is permitted. Copyright regulations are enforced.

Orientation: Library staff will provide tours of the library and information about library services to an individual or a group.

Conference Room: The Library Conference Room is available for meetings of up to 20 people. It can be reserved at the Circulation Desk or by calling X5529. Please make reservations at least 24 hours in advance

Audio-Visual room: Viewing equipment for cassettes and slides is located in the video room
