Do you see a health care provider outside VA?

Many Veterans see VA and community health care providers. This can make it difficult for providers to access the records they need to manage a Veteran’s care. By sharing a Veteran’s health information electronically, VA and community health providers are better able to coordinate and improve the overall quality of care for our Veterans.

Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record (VLER) Health Exchange is a program that shows certain parts of your VA health record between the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and non-VA health care providers. These electronic health records are shared securely and privately through the Internet using the eHealth Exchange.

VA providers and community health providers view similar information via the eHealth Exchange, including:

  • A list of health problems
  • Allergies
  • Medications
  • Vital signs
  • Immunizations
  • Chemistry and hematology reports
  • Discharge summaries
  • Medical history
  • Records of physicals
  • Procedure results (e.g., X-ray reports)
  • Progress notes

Participating in VLER Health Exchange may:

  • Reduce the need for you to carry paper records
  • Give your provider immediate access to more of your health care information
  • Reduce your chances of having duplicate tests done
  • Increase your safety by providing a more complete medical record, such as your medications and allergies
  • Save you time and money
  • Improve your health outcomes by empowering you
