Blind Rehabilitation Program

Living Skills

Living Skills includes the subcategories of activities of daily living and communication skills, which focus on self-care and skills needed to live safely and independently in the home. Through various activities, participants receive training and adaptive devices to assist with personal hygiene, clothing management, kitchen safety, meal preparation, cleaning, labeling, and organization.
Optometry and Visual Skills
Following a comprehensive evaluation with the Optometrist, Veterans are provided and trained to use various optical aids that will help the Veteran make optimum use of his or her remaining vision. Such devices may include hand held magnifiers, Closed Circuit TV’s and monocular telescopes.
Orientation and Mobility
Persons who are blind or have low vision participate in Orientation and Mobility (O&M) instruction to regain independent mobility confidence and safety in their residential and community environments. O&M instruction is provided on a one-to-one basis and is individually tailored based on personal travel goals stated by the Veteran and results of a functional assessment.
Computer Access Training
Qualifying Veterans may enroll in a separate program focused on accessible technology. Eligible Veterans are provided with and trained in the use of assistive devices and accessible software that enables users to access all facets of modern technology. Instructional areas include general computer operation, internet and email, and may also include integration of mobile devices.
Manual Skills
The Manual Skills therapeutic program is dedicated to assisting Veterans who are visually impaired to achieve their highest level of sensory awareness and personal independence. After evaluation, an individualized treatment program is developed based on the Veteran’s goals, assessed needs and interests. Activities are designed to introduce adapted tools and techniques and challenge the Veteran to use problem-solving skills.
